To many, this video may not come under the purview of mental health, however it does.
HOW- How a society frames and shapes it’s beliefs about gender, gender roles, and voices it out has a bearing on everyone, be it male or female. Time and again, boys and girls are taught the same set of beliefs, and it’s a vicious cycle. Superficially it may seem the female gender is the victim here, sadly it’s not the entire truth. All the genders are equally victims of this belief that a gender determines one’s role, clothing, relationships, job, likes and dislikes, family, life etc. This msg is fed to us directly or indirectly from the day you are born. These are all aspects that have a bearing on your personality and thus your mental health. Man is a social animal. We are all linked to each other and all our beliefs have a bearing on each other. So if a woman cannot feel safe or have the freedom to be her true self, then her mental health is surely compromised, it’s not just her facing the brunt of the problem, the men in her life are equally affected. So what can be done? Organize candle vigils every time someone is raped? Dress more modestly? what exactly is ‘modest’ then? Change laws? Carry around a pepper spray? Do not travel late, alone? Sex education? Change child rearing practices that are gender based? Cause despite all the ruckus and media hype things are still the same.. We just talk, share, tweet, like… What are your comments?
