Play Therapy

Play is often considered a simple thing of very little value. We must understand if play occurs so naturally in humans and animals it would definitely have some purpose, cause otherwise evolution would have sidelined it ages ago. Like the saying goes – its the simple things in life that make a big difference, so does play. The simplest of things it may be, but it is a treasure chest of sorts for child therapists. Cause “Play” is the language by which a child expresses and communicates. Children’s language development does not occur in tandem with their cognitive (thinking) skills and development. Therefore, when a play therapist uses toys, games, and sand play, they help the child to use THEIR best means for self expression. In this way,the therapist is best able to understand how the child thinks, and feels. The therapist can then assist the child in developing an understanding about themselves, which ultimately will help them to make decisions that are rooted in a greater self understanding. Ultimately, the goal of play therapy is to enhance the child’s own self insight, confidence, and competence to make safe and effective decisions for themselves. And though i mentioned it is considered a simple thing- well play therapy SHOULD NOT be equated with NORMAL PLAY. There are many different types of play therapy. Most play therapist’s use variations of models and theories to best meet the child’s needs. So Your licensed therapist is your best bet when it comes to this regard. They may teach you effective play skills, but never equate that to professional therapy. This video is a brief on play. watch, share, clear your doubts here!!
